Sometimes it is difficult for the workforce to imagine a significantly different future. When displays of tabular data have guided energy grid management for decades, how is a transformational future defined. Designers found the answer in the workers themselves.

A better tomorrow
Designers and researchers worked side by side with energy grid professionals in order to understand the nature of the work and how critical, second by second decisions were made. Managers revealed how they compared and contrasted data and how these comparisons drove decisions which in turn drove action. By transforming multiple tabular displays into image-based decision support tools, conditions on the energy grid could be more quickly assessed and understood, and decisions could be more effectively made by an increased number of newly empowered workers.
Megawatt Reserves Video Display
A snippet from the large screen above, this visualization allows Engineers to monitor megawatt reserves across the country and sends alerts when necessary.
Oil and Energy Dashboard
One of many displays that monitored energy consumption, cost, location and much more. Engineers now have a visualization of critical data that can be seen and interpreted with a glance.
This is an exciting thing that we do, but these millennials look at our tools and can't imagine themselves working here.
