Electronic Ink wins an I.D. Magazine 2008 Design Distinction Award

July 10, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Electronic Ink has won a 2008 Design Distinction Award from I.D.(The International Design Magazine), a prestigious magazine covering the art, business and culture of design.

Electronic Ink worked to analyze and improve the 911 Command Center, a terminal that allows emergency responders to choose how best to dispatch critical resources. Electronic Ink conducted an analysis of the Command Center based on observations of current dispatcher usage and Electronic Ink’s expertise in user interface design. Through this analysis the strengths and weaknesses of the Command Center were identified and Electronic Ink recommended potential usability and design improvements that ultimately led to the development of screen design concepts that illustrate potential improvements. The goal of the project was to improve the visual appeal and overall usability of the Command Center to maintain product progress and as a competitive differentiator.

The I.D. award called Electronic Ink’s work “a dramatic improvement over the previous system, establishing a clear visual hierarchy in which active radio channels were prioritized over dormant ones, and using animations to better direct responders’ attention.” Judge Khoi Vinh said, “I love the idea of promoting good interaction design for mission-critical applications,” noting that “it’s more than twice as hard, and the stakes are higher.”
