PHILADELPHIA, PA – Joe Weiss, Chairman of Electronic Ink, today participated in an exclusive panel discussion on innovation, and in the evening received a high honor from Temple University, where he earned both his undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees.
The afternoon panel, part of the IT Symposium hosted by Temple University–s Fox School of Business and Management, focused on innovation within organizations, as part of its IT Symposium series of exclusive events. During the discussion, Weiss emphasized the importance of research and user–centered design in the innovation process. Fellow panelists included: Cristobal I. Conde, President and CEO, SunGard Data Systems, Inc.; Matthew Charles Mullenweg, Founder, Automattic; Rajiv Banker, Merves Chair and Professor; and Youngjin Yoo, Associate Professor and Irv Gross Fellow. Munir Madviwalla, Executive Director of the University’s Management Information Systems Department, served as moderator.
At the 8th Annual Information Technology Awards reception that evening at the university, Weiss received the Distinguished Alumni Award, given in recognition of his career in IT and his contributions to the community, industry and Temple University.
Known as a keen business strategist, Weiss has specialized in driving exponential growth of organizations throughout his career – which has included roles such as Chairman and CEO of Packard Press, Inc., the practice of corporate law for elite clients in banking, media and professional sports, and ownership and operation of print and broadcast media outlets, as well as a film production company. Since joining Electronic Ink, Weiss has helped to steer the company to remarkable growth in size and scope – revenue has catapulted, staff has doubled, and offices in London and New York have opened in response to client demand.
Always, Weiss has been highly active in promoting Temple University, where he earned undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees. For more than 30 years, he has been involved in fundraising, alumni leadership, athletics and selection of university leadership.
In remarks made while accepting his award, Weiss reminisced about the reception space – Mitten Hall – and how much things have changed.
“Now, I have to say, it does bring back memories to be here in this room,” he said. “Mitten Hall was my first destination point at Temple in September of 1959 for registration and orientation. Back then we didn’t go online to register for the classes we wanted. We stood in line and hoped for the best.”
Weiss expressed to more than 200 attendees at the awards ceremony – business leaders, faculty, students and guests – what has not changed: Temple’s ability to prepare students for remarkable careers.
To the students, Weiss said, “Trust your inherent talent, and the skills that this University helps you to hone. You will go forth and do remarkable things. And when you do, I urge you to stay connected to your peers and – specifically – other alumni of Temple. I hope that you will find – as I have – that it truly turns out the best and the brightest professionals who will design the future.”
