Research

Both an art and a science, the work of the Design Research department brings user feedback into the design and development process. Specialists with advanced degrees in fields including information systems, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, interaction design, and anthropology comprise the team.

Electronic Ink’s Philadelphia headquarters hosts two full-service Insight Labs for usability testing: the keen observation, measurement, evaluation and improvement of how people interact with software, devices and technology.

In 19th floor facility — our Digital Lab — Design Researchers perform design and usability assessments, manage requirements gathering, and conduct usability testing with Eye Tracking technology. They leverage leading-edge methodologies to assess usability, taxonomy, navigation and other critical components of software applications, business systems, intranets, extranets, video displays/kiosks, concepts and prototypes.

The work of this team transcends the study of software and products to analyze how people perform in highly specific environments by observing and testing how they interact with specific tools in unique settings.

Electronic Ink has built an Immersive Lab on our 20th floor where nearly any real-world environment can be recreated for observation and testing. A pharmacy, an air traffic control tower, a call center operating on SAP technology… our immersive lab can reproduce and analyze how users behave in any of these settings.

On any given week, several exciting projects are under way in Electronic Ink’s Insight Labs. Out of box testing observes if consumers can configure the latest handheld device with only the maker’s instructions. User testing of a manufacturer's website determines what features and benefits potential car buyers prefer in their automobiles.

Critical data gathered during testing drives design and development. Through quantitative and qualitative testing, Electronic Ink clients are guaranteeing — not guessing — that the end-product we design for them — whether it’s software, systems, products or environments — will satisfy the people who use it.
